My Review:What an incredibly moving, beautiful story with an incredibly creative set-up. Rey needs a girl's picture to show a warlord in Afghanistan to prove that he has a fiancee and doesn't need the warlord's daughter to fill the position. He's simply trying to avoid a conflict with the tribe. So he goes to facebook and finds a picture that will work...a modest and respectable looking girl from his hometown, but one that he's never actually met. After a little bit of doctoring he has the engagement photo, but before he can use it, he gets blown up and the burned, tattered photo makes the international news.
Although Grace knows who his mother is in their small town, she has no idea how or why Rey would be saying she's his fiancee when she doesn't even know him. But he's a desperately wounded soldier and everyone around her knows that she should be with her fiance during this time. She's basically railroaded into visiting him and not given time to say two words about the fact that she doesn't know him before she's shepherded onto a plane headed for Walter-Reed Army Medical Center.
Rey lost both his legs and his brain doesn't connect quite right anymore which affects his speech. Although his brain works, he can't unscramble the right words to explain what happened with Grace to her or anyone else.
Grace is one of those people...she's empathetic and although she knows she doesn't belong here, she can't abandon Rey who's basically hurt and alone and a bit confused and more than a bit traumatized. This bizarre set of circumstances set up one of the most beautiful romantic stories I think I've read this year. The timeline of the novel takes place over around 8-9 months and these two are only together that first week he's home when he got hurt. The rest of the time they are connecting long-distance via text and creating an incredibly strong bond and friendship. Everything about that worked for me.
And I loved these two characters. Anna Richland does an incredible job with Rey showing his doubts, fears, and hopes along the way. He hates what has happened to him and hates it even more that Grace sees him helpless like this. I can't imagine how hard it would be to deal with this kind of communication issue on top of everything else. It made my heart ache so much for Rey and I know that there are so many real Vets who are dealing with these kinds of losses every single day.
There are many times throughout the book where the ideal of "hero" is examined. Rey lost a lot, others lost more and the book is a great reminder of that. There are heroes every where in our lives, but we owe our soldiers so much. They are just doing their jobs, but those jobs can come at such an incredibly high price. It's a good reminder.

I’ll confess, right off the bat I don’t read much contemporary romance. I’m not sure why – maybe I overdid it on Nora Roberts in the first decade of this century; maybe it’s not escapist enough – whatever the reason, I read 10 or even 20 historicals for every contemporary.
That said – if someone gave me more contemporaries like this one, I would read them like crazy!
This book – really more of a novella – was every bit as poignant as it needed to be, considering the hero lost his legs and suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Both of these are dealt with in a non-patronizing way, and I especially like that the heroine, Grace, steps up to the challenges thrown her way. As the family member and friend of people who’ve dealt with TBIs, I also appreciated the very realistic and sensitive portrayal of what Rey went through and how frustrated he was.
Other great stuff it’s a road trip story, which is always a win for me. Rey is a cocky smart-ass, which also really works for me. My best friend dated a guy just like him in high school who, coincidentally, went into the Army. I know the type and Rey’s character rang true all the way through. The supporting characters were great too; I especially liked when Rey met Grace’s parents.
5 stars, and definitely on the re-read list.
This story really touched my heart.
Staff Sergeant Reynaldo Crus was deployed to Afghanistan with the Operational Detachment Alpa 5131, 5th Special Forces Group of the United States Army. One of the men that he helped in the village, wanted to repay the blessings by offering his own daughter up to marry Raf. If Raf said no, it would be taking as a insult, and could cause them to open fire on the Americans. The only way for Raf to get out of the marriage was to show prove that he was engaged. Raf found a picture of a girl from his home town. He had never met Grace Kim, but he was able to smash a picture of her, and him together in a digital layout, then added images of rings, and roses. The unit had reported embedded with them. When Raf got injured , the reporters found the picture, and aired it on the news.
Grace was speechless when she got phone calls from her boss, and family saying how sorry they were, that her fiancée was injured in the war. Her boss gave her a plane ticket so she could visit her fiancée, and a week off of work. Grace wanted answers, so she went to see Raf in the hospital. She found out that he had lost both legs. Raf wanted so bad to tell her why he made up the story, but he was so frustrated that the words he wanted to say, would not come out of his mouth. He was also having problems writing. He had so much to say, but no way to communicate. The two got to know each other a little better throughout the week. I loved how Grace accepted Raf right away. She stayed even when Raf got mad, and tied to push her away. Some of his thoughts throughout the story gave me chuckle. Yes, he was 100% man. After Grace left the hospital, the two started texting, and the friendship build.
This was a beautiful story. Raf had to learn to live once again. Grace never felt sorry for him, and did not let him feel sorry for himself. One passage that will always stay with me from this story was that Raf discovered there were 3 types of people. Those who ignored you. Those who held doors and rushed to help whether you needed it or not, as if you were a Muppet. And Those who treated you like a regular man sitting in a chair.
Raf, and all Veterans served in the military. They did more before 5 am, than most of us do all day long. When they lose a leg, they don't want pity. They will always be a soldier. They have earned respect.
